Scholarships for the learn to swim lessons will be awarded to qualified recipients and redeemed at approved and reputable private swim schools in the United States which meet the standards set by the board of directors of the Foundation.

The Need:

According to the CDC, drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death in the United States among children under 14 and the leading cause of accidental death for children 5 and under.

Of all preschoolers who drown, 70% are in the care of one or both parents at the time and 75% are missing from sight for five minutes or less. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, recent evidence also suggests that participation in formal swimming lessons is associated with an 88% reduction in the risk of drowning in children aged 1 to 4 years.

History:

Jeff Gershe founded The 1650 Swim Foundation Inc.  The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation.

Why 1650?  The 1650 yard Freestyle is one mile, the longest event in Collegiate swimming competition; 66 lengths of a 25-yard pool.  The training for the race requires mental toughness, determination, persistence, dedication and many long hours of practice in the pool. It was Jeff’s favorite race.

The 1650 Swim Foundation was created to provide financial assistance to individuals and families who do not have the financial resources for learn to swim classes for their children.  The Foundation will raise funds from donations to provide learn to swim lessons at no charge to those who qualify based on economic need.  The foundation will also offer financial assistance to individuals with special needs.
